A deep tissue massage is a type of massage that is aimed at working the deeper tissue structures of the muscles and connective tissue. While very similar in technique to a swedish massage, greater pressure is applied to the target areas. Deep tissue massages are often targeted to specific problem areas to address chronic muscle tension, or knots. By targeting muscle knots your therapist will be able to loosen the knots in these problem areas, and leave your feeling much more relaxed.
Many people express concern that a deep tissue massage may hurt and this should never be a case. While a deep tissue massage by necessity will use more pressure than a traditional swedish massage, the pressure should never rise to the point of pain. In fact if the level of pressure is more than you are comfortable with it can cause you to unconsciously tense up, which will make it harder to achieve results.
Your therapist will work with you to determine the exact amount of pressure to be used to help your body relax and heal. Always speak up if your pressure tolerance changes. It is not uncommon to have your bodies pressure tolerance change during a massage as your body grows accustomed to the pressure. By communicating with your therapist they will be able to more quickly adjust their pressure to be harder or softer depending on your bodies needs. A deep tissue massage will leave you feeling relaxed, with greater freedom of movement, and will promote healing of the targeted area.
